CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

The Fourth TEPHINET Southeast Asia/Western Pacific

Bi-Regional Scientific Conference

Taipei, Taiwan

26^th – 30^th November, 2007  

The Training Programs in Epidemiology and Public Health Interventions Network (TEPHINET) together with Taiwan CDC are organizing the Second African Regional TEPHINET Conference, which will be held from 26^th to 30^th November 2007, in Taipei, Taiwan. The theme for this conference is “Applying Modern Technology to Upgrade Field Epidemiology”, with emphasis on applied epidemiologic investigations linked to public health actions. The conference agenda will include keynote speakers, workshops, plenary sessions, and juried oral and poster presentations.  

Trainees and recent graduates of applied epidemiology and public health training programs are invited to submit abstracts on investigations conducted during training and completed within the past two years. We are interested in abstracts describing outbreak investigations; development, implementation and evaluation of emerging diseases (e.g. HIV/AIDS, TB, Trypanosomiasis, Hemorrhagic Fevers, Chronic Diseases, etc.) surveillance activities; or other areas in applied epidemiology in which the results are linked to public health action.  

We will consider abstracts for oral or poster presentation. Each speaker will have 10 minutes to present, after which there will be a 10-minute question and answer period. This discussion period will be moderated by an assigned discussant who has the option of making brief comments before opening the floor to questions. 

• Deadlines.  Abstracts will be submitted online during May 01-June 30, 2007. All abstracts must be submitted through the program directors. (See Attached Abstract Instructions)

 

• Acceptance.  All submitters will be notified by August 2 8, 2007 whether their

      abstract(s) has been accepted or declined for an oral or poster presentation.

混了几天日子，是该好好干活了。不过虽是混日子，心思也没有闲着。最近想到的是关于反朴归真的话题，比如三件事-订机票、写manuscript和过日子。

 

打了几通电话，在网上逛了几个来回，从UA到Continental再到一些个小公司，最后还是定了CA的航班，价格适中，可以累积航程。其实用star alliance 的卡买UA的也是可以的，但是接线员总是不等我把问题问完就挂断电话，大陆航空的服务很好，可是在没有预先通知我的情况下涨了价。开始不想定CA的原因是因为我需要在美国国内转机，听说很是麻烦，所以希望有一个连程的机票。最后只好用airfare站点通过网络定了美国国内的票。这些麻烦都是因为travel plan, 想要去的地方太多，时间有限。最后还是随了大部队，决定到NY去开开眼。后来想如果从一开始就拿定主意，不要考虑太多，机票早就该订好了。套用小学作文我的惯用语：这件事使我明白了一个道理-简单最好

 

关于Manuscript， 师姐传来简讯说她的还在on process, 想想自己的 HCWs和case-control，估计也会在一年以后on process。所以不要太着急，just keep writing.越是想要很快投出去，越是停滞不前。

 

过日子，天不生姐姐那天死死盯住我的柜子问：里面的瓶瓶罐罐全是你的？答曰：是；天狗子愤愤然问我：用一个衣柜够不够？答曰：不够。还要譬如咖啡粉和滤纸，早麦片，午水果，晚牛奶。还有我的“航母”，老妈每次听说我要出门前总会问：你那个大箱子装满了，你拿得动吗？答曰：拿不动也要装满:)生活越丰富越好，日子还是简单些吧。

从工体的鹿港小镇开始吧，每次去那里必点的三道菜：三杯鸡、台式卤肉饭和红豆甜汤。天狗子从香港的太平山顶打来电话，无奈沉浸于美食和帅哥美女的我们无动于衷。觉得小狐狸的记性和中文都非常好，常常反客为主。

 

然后就到了元宵节，之前写过了，朝阳公园是不会再去了，不刮风也不去了。从昆明带来的乳扇还放在慢走居酒屋，那里的名古屋烤鸡翅和各种各样的烧酒很地道，老板也很和蔼。

 

索尼探梦还想再去，可以复习几乎所有的初中物理知识

 

当然在实在没有想法或者加班的情况下，我们还选择过一茶一座和味千拉面（天不生和学森念“wei gan”, 秦秦念“wei four”），比如三八节那天，我已然准备好了现场文件准备奔赴福建，在东方新天地逛街的时候又得知第二天换了人选。我这边case-control的paper却还毫无进展，统计的悬念太多了，明天导师还有一个telephone conference，只好取消和北医老师的见面。

 

周二的集体活动是不能不提的，博物馆奇妙夜（Night at Museum）让我们的团队成员多了两个可爱的外号：笨笨（Maya language）和重重。

 

Devil wears Prada也很有意思，估计将来很长一段时间，秀水的Prada会不太畅销。

 

美食不能不提Tasty（西堤牛排），虽然是一家大众的牛排馆，但是生牛肉色拉没有一点腥味，烤羊膝配红酒沾酱也很不错。维也纳咖啡没什么特色，咖啡豆选料也不好。

 

一直再没有机会见到小狐狸，但是对他的敬仰还是如滔滔江水。

 

还有什么？IEIP的proposal写完了，和美国CDC短期专家的会开完了，建立监测系统的讨论完了，亲历了美国签证（我总结为：排队排队再排队之面试）PNAs上发了一篇关于Guangdong是H5感染来源的文章，又让我们忙碌了一阵。从Epidata把数据导入SPSS和Stata遇到了麻烦，去掉“comment legal show”可以解决Stata 的问题，但是对于统计方面还是一团乱麻，无从入手。周末Elsevier的高端论坛将要在中国大饭店举行，不会有休息了，想到Tim的邮件：Weekend? No, Never, I have no weekend.

感谢我的朋友们，哪怕相隔千里，哪怕从未谋面，哪怕形影不离。

 

 

迄今为止，没有去过太多的国家，签证却办了不少，有自己的也有帮别人的，所以把一些感受写下来，希望对大家有用

第一、根本原则-战略上藐视它，战术上重视它

不管哪个国家的签证，都会有自己相应的要求，从各种表格证件到照片尺寸。我们首先应该找到最权威也是最新的签证资料信息（推荐外交部网站）一丝不苟的按照人家的要求去准备，不管那些要求多么邪门。我办理申根签证时就遇到麻烦，因为我向来对户口这种计划经济的畸形儿很不喜欢，虽然人家写了要原件，我还是拿了个复印件去。结果就是多了奔波了一趟，浪费了两个小时。

另外，出国的目的要端正，我们才有可能藐视签证这个东西。当你处心积虑去做一件事情的时候，往往效果不好。有朋友说过一句话：命里有时终须有，命里无时莫强求。认真诚实得回答每个问题，理直气壮地complain无理的刁难和盘问。如果被拒了，就问清楚原因，看看有没有补救的措施。如果是硬伤，那只有放弃或者换一个时机。

第二、友好、自信、懂礼貌

不要把签证官当作敌人，他们其实就是自己国家的一名普通公务员。我遇到的很多签证处的人员其实是很负责任的，所以每次我都会主动向他们问好，同时微笑。今天按指纹的时候见到一个金发美女，然后我就笑了，她也笑了，虽然不是签证官但是自己的心情也会变得很好。泰国驻昆领事馆的那个阿姨对我特别好，隔了好几个月再去的时候她都记得我:)。我喜欢和他们说英语，因为听到他们生硬的汉语，我总是忍不住想笑。

第三、坚决抵制一切不合理的签证制度

比如预约西班牙签证的时候，他们公布的预约电话根本无法接通。我的方法是：每天把我的申请材料发三份传真到使馆，三封邮件，同时在传真和邮件标题上统计发送的次数，并抄送他们国家的外交部。当我发到第四次的时候，使馆打电话通知了我的面签时间。

还有在签证的时候，总有人想通过贿赂中国雇员得到好处。这种时候，我一定跳出来反对。比如在巴西使馆，接件的是位上海阿姨，有个旅行社的，看起来和她比较熟，就想插队，结果被我制止了。记住，签证是外国人给的，如果有同胞不明事理，就要好好教育。

 

读万卷书，行万里路。人在旅途，总能让我们胸襟更开阔，待人更真诚。

China reports bird flu deaths in Tibet poultry
-----------------------------------------------
China has suffered an outbreak of H5N1 avian flu among poultry in
remote Tibet, while the virus also struck down thousands of wild
birds in the region, state media and animal health monitors reported
late on Tuesday [6 Mar 2007].

In a report submitted to the World Organisation for Animal Health
(OIE) [see comment further], China's chief veterinary officer, Jia
Youling, said the poultry died of the H5N1 strain of bird flu, which
can be deadly to humans who have close contact with infected birds.

Jia reported that 680 fowl died in the outbreak in Chengguan Village
near Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, and nearly 7000 other birds there
were culled, according to the OIE web-site [See comment following
item 2].

The poultry died on 1 Mar 2007, the official Xinhua news agency
reported. It did not specify what kind of birds were infected. The
government has closed the market and is also monitoring the health of
wild birds, it added.

"Specialists believe the virus was introduced by wild birds migrating
from east Africa to west Asia, as no outbreaks of the disease had
been reported in the source areas of the poultry," Xinhua said.

Jia also reported 3 separate outbreaks of H5N1 among wild birds in
Tibet, including one that killed 28 migratory birds near Lhasa and 2
others that killed 2579 and 57 wild birds elsewhere in the region.

The wild species infected included bar-headed geese, crows and hawks,
according to the OIE.

There were also 2 outbreaks that killed 984 wild birds in Qinghai
province, which neighbors Tibet, as well as 2 deaths among wild birds
in northeast China's Liaoning province, Jia reported. His report gave
no dates for the wild bird deaths.

Some scientists believe many outbreaks of bird flu in China's vast
poultry sector have gone unreported until human infections in
effected places have alerted health officials to the presence of the
virus.

A woman farmer in China's southeastern province of Fujian has been
infected with the H5N1 form of bird flu, China confirmed last week,
the 1st human case in the country in about 7 weeks. World Health
Organization officials have gone to the site of that case to
investigate.

The Ministry of Agriculture said an investigation team it sent down
to the woman's village found no trace of the H5N1 virus in poultry
samples.

China has now reported a total of 23 human cases of bird flu,
including 14 deaths, since 2003, and, with the largest poultry
population and millions of backyard birds roaming free, it is seen as
central to the fight against the virus.

China will vaccinate billions of domestic poultry over the next few
months to guard against an outbreak of bird flu this spring, when the
virus is at its most contagious, state media reported on Monday [5
Mar 2007].

人的生活态度和方式真的是不一样，这件事情让我更认真地去检视自己，我庆幸自己的觉醒和执着。哈

虽然忙碌却总有惊喜，虽然简单却总有温暖：来自家人和朋友的牵挂、帮助和鼓励，来自努力工作的成果，来自旅途中那些人和事还有美妙的风景。

鹿港小镇的甜汤好喝，岚不要忘了在上海带上Baby去尝尝。你告所我另一半Match的原则，我记住了。

慢走餐厅烤得乳扇美味，还有烤银杏和烧酒，安静的环境让我的心一点点恢复。但是却被一个聪明的家伙问倒了——

三个代表是什么？

eee，我回答了一个，后来一想才发现连这一个也背错了。主要是大脑一直在思考信任危机和男人和雄性动物和网恋和远距离交配和邮箱和傻冒和自由和。。。今早醒来就能背出两个了。

GXY的电子辞典在元宵夜被偷了，我觉得很是沮丧。好端端一个节日被破坏了。虽然朝阳公园的灯丑的程度等于当天晚上的大风，但是Genshilla和Sony探梦很有意思。

在做静电杯那个游戏的时候真的感觉自己被电到了。

但是忘了问共产党员的婚嫁原则！！

总之，当我遇到一个聪明人时，我喜欢自己大脑被动员的感觉，棋逢对手是很享受的一件事情。

做好了美国签证的准备，还把投诉的邮箱和Fax记下了，看他敢不敢随便据签。
